>>>LM7
History<<<
In mid October 2004, Lakeside Machine was asked to develop a
rimfire belt feed system that would accommodate
the common lower receivers of the AR15 and M16 style of firearms. On November
26th of 2004 the LM7 was revealed. The LM7 was created using the proven technology found in our
former Browning miniature and Vindicator line of products. To the best of our knowledge, this
rimfire feed system is the only select fire
capable rimfire beltfed conversion in the world. The
LM7 is a BATFE approved design. It is a NON-Firearm upper conversion and is NOT
a firearm or firearm receiver. NO FFL NEEDED >>>LM7
Features<<<
The LM7 is made of steel and
its durability is paralleled to the Browning miniatures that have been built by
Lakeside for years. The design is robust and will run tens of
thousands of rounds with minimal wear. Higher wear parts such as springs and
firing pins will be inexpensive and easily replaced by the user. (Lakeside
recommends following cleaning and maintenance procedures to ensure long life of
the upper) Each LM7 has a unique quick change
barrel system that comes standard. Within seconds, a barrel can be taken down or
swapped out with a new or cooler one. Lakeside Machine is also exploring the
17M2 caliber options that will also be quick change.
The LM7's hand guard mount
system is identical to the threads found on military spec upper receivers.
Virtually any hand guard known that fits current AR15 uppers will fit the LM7.
These threads do not hold the barrel as in a .223 receiver, but simply hold hand guards.
This versatility enables the LM7 to be fit with any clam shell style hand guard
to any of the free floated and the latest Picatinny rail systems at any time.
The standard barrel is 16.25" with 1/2-28 threads for all
common muzzle attachments. The contour is straight and is 3/4" in diameter.
This barrel contour is designed to be simple and machine friendly for any future
custom modifications. The LM7 incorporates a quick change
barrel system for any barrel length or configuration desired. The barrel also
has a floating front sight block with weaver compatible rails for accessories and
sights. The standard barrel is chambered for 22LR but 17M2 is being explored as
a quick change caliber option.
The rear sight rail of the LM7 upper is machined so any
Picitinny adaptable optic sight can be mounted. Eotech and other electronic dot sights are
very popular and work well with this style of platform. The rear Picitinny
rail can also use the clamp-on iron sight systems commonly found on the open market.
The rear sight rail also houses the top feed cover release. The release lever is ambidextrous
and can be operated easily.
Modifications are needed to use the LM7
feed system on your
AR15/M16 lower
receiver. The energies from a rimfire cartridge are tremendously different than those for
a centerfire cartridge. The LM7 is a blow back operating mechanism. The limited energy
of the 22 LR is used to accomplish the entire cycling process and advance the
belt for each cartridge.
All factory centerfire buffer assemblies in the lowers must be changed from centerfire to our
LM7 buffer design. The LM7's buffer also acts as a safety feature with
this unit. With the Lakeside's rimfire buffer installed you will not be able to operate any
centerfire upper if attached. The LM7 is able to be installed on carbine
stocked lowers and full length rifle stocked lowers. Two buffer spacer shims are
supplied with the upper kit that enables the use of either carbine or rifle
configurations.
Each upper feeds ammunition from our woven
fabric belts or our Nylon disintegrating links. A loaded belt is fed
directly into the upper from the belt box. Each belt box is also designed to be
a catcher if attached on the right side of the brass catcher. The fired cartridges are expelled downward though the steel empty case catcher/feed
box mount. 200 empty cases can be caught in the "brass catcher" or the floor plate can be
hinged open to let all brass flow right through. For users of indoor firing
ranges, the LM7 is a "No-Mess" combination. You can catch your
belts/links and the empty brass and never have to clean up a mess with a broom.

Below is the
basic kit assembled on a carbine stocked lower assembly.

Below is a view of the LM7's
top feed cover open with a loaded belt in the feed tray. Notice how the
relationship of the feed box and catcher box are positioned. The LM7 is a self
contained feed system. It will feed and catch all belts/links and spent brass.
The entire feed box mount/catcher system is easily removed by simply pressing
the magazine release on your lower and pulling it downward as if it were a
magazine.

Below is an example of the LM7
taken down for transport. The feed box/catcher system is removed as well as the
quick change barrel. The after market accessories shown are available from many retail
accessory shops. The LM7 feeds both links and belts.
